Los Angeles Dodgers’ Alex Wood (14-1, 2.30 ERA) had a no decision in his last game against the Chicago White Sox despite delivering a quality start. While Pittsburgh Pirates’ Gerrit Cole (10-8, 4.04 ERA) also had a no decision in his last match versus the Milwaukee Brewers. The two are set to pitch against each other at Pittsburgh’s home field, PNC Park.

Wood only gave up six hits including one homer in seven innings while he struck out six batters in his last match versus the White Sox. Even though he only got a no decision in his last game, he is still 3-0 in his past four starts with a 2.77 ERA. As for his last showdown against the Pirates on May 8, he threw five shutout innings while he only allowed two hits and got 11 batters struck out in five frames.

On the other hand, Cole gave up four runs on five hits including three dingers while he struck out nine batters against the Brewers in his last game but he got away with a no decision despite performing poorly in that match. He’s given up 26 home runs this year so far which is more than double his previous career high. In his previous game versus the Dodgers on August 13 last year, he gave up six runs on 12 hits while he only struck out three batters in 4.1 frames and ended up with a loss.

Pirates’ Starling Marte is the only out of their lineup to hit over .300 against Wood; he’s gotten one run on four hits in 13 at bats with a .308/.438/.385 stat line and a .822 OPS. But the last time he faced the Dodgers’ starter was back in 2015.

While Dodgers’ Yasiel Puig could do well against Cole; he’s gotten two runs on five hits in nine at bats with a .556/.556/.778 triple slash line and a 1.333 OPS versus the Pirates’ starting pitcher. But he hasn’t faced the starter for the past two years as well.
Despite getting no decisions in their last matches, Wood has been clearly better than Cole lately. Plus, the Dodgers’ batting lineup has done well versus Cole while Pittsburgh’s lineup has been having some difficulty against Wood. Unfortunately for the Pirates, they also got swept the last time they met MLB’s current best team and they might not be able to avenge those losses yet.
Projected Winner: Los Angeles Dodgers
