New York Yankees’ Masahiro Tanaka (8-10, 4.92 ERA) will come off the disabled list after resting due to a right shoulder inflammation. While Detroit Tigers’ Matthew Boyd (5-6, 5.70 ERA) will get another shot for a starting spot after he came off the bullpen in his last game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. They are set to face each other at Detroit’s home field, Comerica Park.

While he got a loss in his last game against the Tigers on August 2 despite delivering a quality start; he only gave up two runs on six hits while he struck out seven batters in six innings.

On the other hand, Boyd was relegated to the bullpen in his last game versus the Dodgers; he gave up a run and a hit while he struck out two batters in an inning. While he got a no decision in his last start against the Minnesota Twins on August 13; he gave up four runs on six hits including two homers while he struck out five batters in 5.2 frames. He also delivered a similar performance in his last match versus the Yankees on June 2, 2016; he gave up four runs on six hits while he only struck out three in 6.1 innings and got the loss.

Tigers’ Justin Upton could do well against Tanaka out of their lineup; he’s gotten one run on two hits with a .333/.333/.500 stat line and a .833 OPS in six at bats. However, he’s been worse off against right handed pitchers with a .264/.350/.505 stat line compared to hitting at .344/.422/.688 versus southpaws.

While Yankees’ Ronald Torreyes could cause Boyd some problems in their first match up against each other because Torreyes has been hitting accurately with a .310 batting average versus lefties. However, he hasn’t been hitting hard enough with a .304 OBP and a .365 slugging percentage.
Since Tanaka just came off an injury, it’s possible that he could have a bad game against the Tigers. However, he’s been better than Detroit’s starter throughout this season so far with 11 quality starts compared to Boyd’s seven. While Boyd has been having some difficulty delivering a quality start since his solid three-game win streak last month. Both pitchers could have some difficulty in this game but the Yankees could get their revenge over a 2-1 loss in their last series versus the Tigers if Tanaka plays well.
Projected Winner: New York Yankees
